Academy of Lifelong Learning Wraps Up Fall Series
Bill Patnaude and Denney Hanselman will examine the status of solid waste collection, disposal and recycling on both county and state levels during a November 4 program from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  The Beltrami County environmental services director, Patnaude will discuss the current system, explaining what items are being put into the waste stream, how they are collected, where processing takes place, and what the end products are.  Hanselman, a regional solid waste planner with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in Detroit Lakes, plans to talk about the responsibility of that government organization in developing markets for recyclable products and where the waste is going across the United States and around the world.  Join us for this final Academy of Lifelong Learning session. Presentation Pitfalls and Successes
Kerry Ross will describe what makes presentations effective or unproductive during a Brown Bag Lunch program November 5 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.  During the program, she will identify the top 10 presentation pitfalls and suggest ways to avoid those problems.  Ross will also cover the basics of the PowerPoint software and share hints on using visuals in a non-distracting manner.  "This program will help those who build a presentation that has an intended result on the audience," said Ross.  "The keys to effective presentations remain the same, regardless of its purpose or audience, and the ideas discussed during this session are applicable to all situations."  More information and the full schedule of brown bag luncheon series are online.

Regional Employer Support Network Presents "Valuing Diversity"
Dr. Don Day will present the program "Valuing Diversity" November 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Currently the executive director of the BSU American Indian Center, Day will focus primarily on the Native American perspective of diversity while also presenting a general discussion on the topic.  During the program, he will explain general cultural characteristics of American Indians and how these traits apply culturally, socially, educationally, and professionally in mainstream society.  He also plans to provide insights on how individuals may better understand some of the racial, cultural and economic gaps that currently exist in Minnesota and the United States. 

Grant Writing Course Offered Online
Students in this course will have a grant application completed, a template for writing future grants, experience gathering supportive documentation, and knowledge of the grant making universe.   This course will be offered online and begins November 10.  Instruction will be provided by Mr. Nathan Dorr.  Nate holds a Master's degree in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute.  He is currently employed as an analyst with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Natural Resources Consortium Presents an Update on TB
A natural resources presentation examining tuberculosis in the United States, with an emphasis on the current situation in Minnesota, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, November 17.  Presenting will be Dr. Sheryl Shaw, an area epidemiology officer with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services, St. Paul. Emergency Planning and Management
Steven Dwine will discuss various facets of emergency preparedness when he presents "Making Sure You Have an OFD (Organizational Floatation Device)" from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. November 19.  "More important than having a plan is making the plan," said Dwine.  "This is especially true for emergencies.  We can't plan for disasters ? if we could, we wouldn't have any.  Working through the planning process and sharing expectations are essential in today's world, where many of us are linked to and dependent on others for even the most basic goods and services."  The program is designed to help small and medium-sized organizations identify the essential elements of a successful process for planning.  Additional information and registration are online. 

"What's New Word 2007?" Offered Online
This one-week course is designed to assist users of previous versions of Word become comfortable and efficient using Word 2007. The course focuses on the program's new user interface. The purpose of the course is to help the experienced Microsoft Word PC user transition quickly to Word 2007.  The primary emphasis will be on the user interface but there will also be tips regarding some of the new functions available.  This course is designed for people familiar with a previous version of Word who wish to quickly migrate to Word 2007, with a minimum learning curve. This course is scheduled to be offered December 1-7, 2008 and again January 26 through February 1, 2009More information and registration are online. 

"Quickbooks" Training Offered Online
In this two week on-line course for business professionals, you will learn how your business or non-profit entity can use QuickBooks to its fullest potential.   A few features and highlights from the on-line course include:
